About parking and transportation:

Most guests find they rarely need a car, if at all.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: There is excellent public transportation, called "Muni", to all directions from bus stops within a few blocks from the apartment. Stops for lines 1-3-22 are one block from the apartment and will serve your needs most of the time. Many other bus, street car or cable car lines cover the entire city. Always ask for a transfer to continue on another line without further cost. If you have a smart phone or computer you can check the next departure time or plan an entire trip to/from anywhere in the SF Bay area by calling 511 or clicking 511 Transit and fill in start and end of your trip.
The arrival of the next bus is announced at NextMuni.com after selecting the route, direction and your stop. Then bookmark the link on your computer or smart phone or jot down the stop number for use with your cell phone. There should be a public transit map in the apartment if no one took it.
Internet links showing the next arrival times for the 3 most important bus routes within one block from the apartment:

No.3 from Pine and Fillmore streets to Downtown Union Square and further.

CAR RENTALS-TAXIS-BART-CALTRAIN-GOLDEN GATE TRANSIT & FERRIES: Car rental companies are a 15-minute walk from here on or near Van Ness avenue. Zip Cars for rent are parked 2 blocks away (add zip code 94115), but for new members there is an application wait period of 1-3 days. Taxis are plentiful near Fillmore street, one block away. A taxi to or from the airport will take about 25 minutes and $50 including tip. Airport shuttles are about $20 per person. BART TRAIN to and from the airport is possible but not practical for most visitors because it does not let you off near our apartment and you'd still have to get a taxi to or from the station or figure out public transportation while having to deal with all that luggage. BART was designed mostly for commuters. CAL TRAIN is a train service connecting San Francisco with cities to the south. Golden Gate Transit is a bus and ferry service that connects to locations North and East across the Bay.

YOUR OWN CAR: If you bring a car be aware that there is no garage parking but you can use our driveway briefly for loading and unloading only. Street parking is generally not easy. Where there are no meters and without a parking permit, the limit is typically 2 hours between 08:00-18:00 hrs, Monday-Friday. Parking police would have to mark your tires first and that's generally done after 09:00 and then they have to come back a minimum of 2 hours later to write a ticket and so you're probably safe till about 11:00. Anytime you see no chalk marks on either the front or back of both street-side tires, you are good for at least 2 hours. Or may be not, because recently, I think, I saw them use a device that photographs your license plate and recognizes it during the next check. If you park your car after 15:30 you should be OK till the next morning. No restrictions during the entire week-end or weekdays 18:00-08:00 hours. Parking tickets run $45-$75 typically. Towing will add hundreds of dollars. If you want to get a visitors parking permit you will have to go down to their office with the welcome letter you received at the time of your arrival (as proof of residence) and you should be prepared to spend several hours and some money to deal with that. I don't think any of our guests ever bothered to do that. Watch out for street cleaning hours as posted on every block. There are expensive parking facilities on the corner of California and Webster Streets and on Webster Street between Sacramento and Clay. If you're careful, the street parking without permit should work for you. Always curb your wheels when parking on a hill -- or face an equally steep ticket. When facing downhill, turn your wheels to the right. When facing uphill on a street with a curb, turn your wheels to the left. When facing uphill on a street with no curb, turn your wheels to the right.
